Take the Clean Energy Survey Today, Tallahassee!
Input Needed to Develop Plan Toward 100 Percent Clean, Renewable Energy
October 07, 2020
The City of Tallahassee has long been recognized as a pioneer among municipal governments in adopting environmentally sustainable practices and incorporating clean, renewable energy into the fabric of its infrastructure. In February 2019, that commitment to sustainability was reinforced when the Tallahassee City Commission voted unanimously to adopt a Clean Energy Resolution, outlining the City’s goal of moving the organization and community to 100 percent net clean, renewable energy by 2050.
To help determine what that transition looks like for Tallahassee, the City is seeking feedback from residents via a Clean Energy Survey. This initial survey is part of a broader community outreach effort that will help identify community priorities in achieving a clean, renewable energy future. Citizen feedback will be used to develop the Clean Energy Plan, which will set forth a recommended roadmap of the most effective policies and technologies best suited for the community’s needs.
“At the City of Tallahassee, we are dedicated to preserving and protecting the environment to ensure a high-quality way of life for our residents for generations to come,” City Manager Reese Goad said. “Community engagement is critical as we look to further expand on what the City has already accomplished through our Tallahassee Solar program, which boasts the world’s largest airport-based solar facility; our partnership with Florida State University to create the first all-electric campus bus system in the nation; and our move to become the first municipality in Florida to power 100 percent of our City-owned buildings with solar energy.”
This year, the City was also recognized as having one of North America’s Top 50 Green Fleets and has committed to shifting all City buses and light-duty vehicles to 100 percent electric no later than 2035. Additionally, 2025 Paris Accord targets were met in 2018 and CO2 emissions (tons) have been reduced by nearly 20 percent in the last 30 years, while servicing 57 percent greater customer demand.
The City is committed to a comprehensive public engagement process throughout the development of the Clean Energy Plan. For more information and to provide feedback via the survey, visit Talgov.com.
