City Prepared for Potential Impacts from Tropical Storm Fred
August 16, 2021
Severe weather from Tropical Storm Fred is expected in Tallahassee today, Aug. 16. Residents are encouraged to stay aware of changing conditions. As of 11 a.m., City services remain under normal operations. City departments are prepared to respond as needed. Check Talgov.com for service updates throughout the day.
Sandbag sites are open at the Mike Blankenship Skate Park (2909 Jackson Bluff Road) and in the south parking lot of the Northwood Centre (1940 North Monroe). The sites will be open until the storm threat has passed and it is determined there is no longer a need.
Crews continue to check areas of known flooding to remove obstructions and post warnings for drivers, if needed. Motorists should use caution and not drive through flooded areas or around barricades.
Severe weather can cause power outages. Electric Utility crews are on standby and ready to be deployed. Citizens should download the free DigiTally app now. Through the app, residents can easily report issues such as downed trees and power outages. Outages can also be reported via Talgov.com/Outage. A map showing general areas with reported outages is available on both the website and app. City utility customers can also call 850-891-4968 to report power outages; call wait times will be longer during major events.
Sustained high winds could cause a temporary suspension of some services. Citizens are encouraged to stay connected by signing up for City news and alerts at Talgov.com/Subscribe. Below are tips to help you weather the storm and recover from any impacts safely.
- Bring loose items and outdoor furniture inside.
- Charge cell phones and portable chargers.
- Put your disaster preparedness kit in an easily accessible spot.
- In the event you encounter a downed wire, do not touch it and stay at least 10 feet away to avoid potential harm.
- Do not drive through flooded areas. One foot of water will float almost all vehicles. Find another route to your destination. Turn around; don’t drown.
- If you choose to use a portable generator in the event of a power outage, always set it up in a well-ventilated, outdoor location at least 20 feet away from all doors, windows and vents. Never use a generator in a garage, even if the door is open.
