Tallahassee Police Make Arrest in Fatal Apalachee Parkway Shooting

The Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) has arrested one person following the fatal shooting that occurred on Sept. 29 in the parking lot of the shopping plaza located at 1147 Apalachee Parkway.
Following a thorough investigation by TPD's Violent Crimes Unit, it was determined the victim was in a verbal altercation with a crowd of individuals. The arrestee, 34-year-old John Coates, approached the victim and shot him. Sadly, the male victim died of his injuries.
The subsequent investigation collected physical evidence and witness statements, allowing detectives to identify the shooter. After consultation with the State Attorney's Office, detectives obtained warrants for second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
