Tallahassee Senior Center Earns National Accreditation Again
TSC One of Only 11 Accredited Senior Centers in the State
August 22, 2019
The Tallahassee Senior Center (TSC) has welcomed active adults for over 40 years. Daily, more than 400 seniors pass through its doors, seeking social connections, engaging activities and opportunities to learn and grow. Those who visit the center know its importance, and now the nation does, too. Recently, the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC), which is part of the National Council on Aging, announced that the Tallahassee Senior Center had earned its coveted accreditation once again, marking the third time the center had reached the organization’s standards of excellence.
“Our Senior Center is phenomenal, from the dedicated staff and generous volunteers to the thousands of engaged participants. Earning and maintaining this accreditation is a testament to the good work we do in the City of Tallahassee to involve and uplift our seniors, ensuring they can stay active, build social ties, continue learning and have fun,” Mayor John Dailey said.
The Tallahassee Senior Center is one of only 11 senior centers across Florida to earn NISC accreditation.
NISC’s announcement showcases the exceptional work of the Tallahassee Senior Center in the areas of planning, community connections, governance, administration and human resources, program development and implementation, evaluation, fiscal and asset responsibility, facility operations and records and reporting.
Noted by NISC was the Tallahassee Senior Center’s future development plans and the opportunity to reach a greater segment of the population with programming.
Last year, the center gathered feedback from the community on a second center to be built along the Welaunee Boulevard extension. According to the most recent Census data, the highest number of people aged 60 years and older live in the east and northeast areas of the community, making the second center’s location ideal for serving the community’s growing senior population.
Plans for the second senior center call for a 30,000-square foot facility with an adjacent 30,000-square foot recreation center and shared-use, multi-purpose gymnasium, which would accommodate activities, classes and programs for active adults.
The Tallahassee Senior Center is operated by Tallahassee Senior Services, which is a division of the City of Tallahassee's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department.
