Original Release
Last night at approximately 10:20 p.m. Patrol Officers with the Tallahassee Police Department attempted to stop a white Chevrolet sedan in the area of Levy Avenue and Iamonia Street. The car fled from the traffic stop and the TPD officers did not pursue the vehicle. The air support helicopter with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office was working in the area and was able to track the vehicle as it made its way through the city and over to the 3200 block of Mission Road. As the helicopter directed TPD units into the area, the pilot could see the vehicle pull onto Moon Lane and park in a parking spot within the complex.
TPD officers on foot and in their police vehicles attempted to detain the driver. The driver again attempted to flee the area, striking several private citizen and TPD vehicles. As the suspect continued to try and get away, the suspects’ car struck one officer who was approaching on foot, causing him injury. Believing the officer may be run over and in fear for their lives, two (2) TPD officers engaged the suspect in gunfire, striking him and ending the threat to both the officers and innocent bystanders. Once the threat was ended, the same officers immediately provided the suspect, later identified as Deshone Donald, emergency medical care until EMS arrived and transported him to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
TPD investigators from the Violent Crimes and Forensic Units were called in to assume the investigation. At this time they are continuing to interview witnesses and process evidence. TPD has secured an initial warrant for Fleeing and Eluding for Mr. Donald and is working closely with the State Attorney’s Office to determine additional charges in the case. A copy of the warrant is attached to this release for further detail. It has been redacted per Florida Statute 119.071(5)(a).
