Is Your Neighborhood Hurricane Ready?
City Offers Resources for Personal Preparedness Efforts
May 07, 2018
Hurricanes, tornadoes and other severe weather can cause widespread damage to Tallahassee neighborhoods and the community at large. While local emergency managers, utility crews, firefighters, law enforcement officers and other responders do an incredible job of keeping residents safe, they cannot do it alone. Individuals and neighborhoods play a vital role in surviving and recovering from a disaster.
Neighborhoods can enhance their resiliency by preparing together with the City's free Neighborhood PREP toolkit. Accessible at Talgov.com/PREP, the toolkit features four modules and downloadable forms and templates that neighborhood leaders and residents can use to organize their neighborhoods. The modules present a suggested framework that can be customized to best fit the needs of each neighborhood. The willingness of neighborhood residents to help each other was clearly demonstrated in the most recent hurricane events, and through the toolkit, neighborhood leaders and residents will better understand the tools and resources needed and/or available within their community.
To help neighborhood leaders and residents prepare, workshops will be held on May 8 at Walker-Ford Community Center, 2301 Pasco Street; May 17 at Gilchrist Elementary School, 1301 Timberlane Road; and May 22 at the Sue McCollum Community Center, 501 Ingleside Avenue. Each workshop will take place from 6-8 p.m. Neighborhood leaders interested in attending should register here. At the workshops, neighborhood leaders will receive a Neighborhood PREP Toolkit. Along with learning about the toolkit and how to use it, attendees will participate in a tabletop exercise designed to give participants a better understanding of the importance of coordinating neighborhoods and resources before a disaster strikes. Attendees will also learn how to host a Build Your Bucket Workshop in their neighborhood.
As the community experienced with Hurricanes Hermine and Irma, personal preparedness can enhance safety and ease the recovery process. From learning what supplies you need to have to updating utility contact information & more, resources are available at Talgov.com/Emergency to help residents plan for and understand how to respond best for their unique situation.
The City is actively preparing for hurricane season, which begins on June 1, through enhanced cross-training, facility maintenance and operational planning. When a storm threatens, the City of Tallahassee will be hurricane ready. Will you?
