Weekend Home Fire Began in Kitchen
May 03, 2021
On May 2 at 9:39 p.m., the Consolidated Dispatch Agency received a 911 call stating a residence within the 700 block of Crossway Road was on fire. Upon arrival, Tallahassee Fire Department crews were met with smoke and fire in the kitchen.
Crews began an aggressive attack and had the fire out within 30 minutes.
A family of six was displaced by the fire and assisted by the Red Cross.
TFD was able to rescue one of the family's two dogs. The other succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire.
Partnering agencies assisting TFD on scene included the Leon County Sheriff's Office, City of Tallahassee Utilities and Leon County EMS.
Nationwide, kitchen fires are a leading cause of residential fires and injuries. Below are three tips to help reduce the risk of an accidental kitchen fire:
- Keep an eye on what you fry.
- Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so no one can bump them or pull them over.
- Move things that can burn, like kitchen towels, away from the stove.
