City Supports "Take a Trip on Transit Day"
StarMetro offers free rides on Monday
April 06, 2017
StarMetro, the City of Tallahassee's public transportation system, will offer fare free rides all day on Monday, April 10, as part of "Take a Trip on Transit Day." With unanimous support by the City Commission, this free service day supports the Florida Pedestrian and Bicycle Coalition's activities during Active Transportation Week, which is April 9-15.
"With our participation, we are encouraging people who don't typically ride the bus to consider the environmentally friendly and cost effective benefits of public transportation," City Commissioner Gil Ziffer said. "I'll be riding StarMetro on Monday, and I hope other residents in our community will join me."
Active Transportation Week is a joint initiative between the Florida Departments of Health and Transportation. It aims to promote walking, biking and transit as active transportation options in the Capital City. Promotion throughout the week will include information on walking and biking safely, the health benefits of walking and biking, how to use transit bike racks and transit route information.
Other activities during Active Transportation Week include a Walkability Assessment, which will be conducted on Friday, April 14. The walking assessment will initiate at the intersection of Old Bainbridge Road and Alabama Street near Griffin Middle School. The goal of the walking assessment is to bring community members together and open a conversation about safe places to walk.
