StarMetro Upgrades Lighting
Changes to C.K. Steele Plaza
March 28, 2013
Last week, StarMetro began construction on its new Proterra FastFill charging station at C.K. Steele Plaza. This week, the transit agency continues that theme by kicking-off another construction project at the downtown terminal – one that will surely brighten up the commute for passengers. Today, StarMetro will begin upgrading the lighting and removing faulty skylights at C.K. Steele. These upgrades are part of StarMetro’s ongoing effort to revitalize the aging facility, which was originally constructed in 1985.
“Our goal in upgrading the lighting at C.K. Steele Plaza is to make our customers feel comfortable and safe while waiting for the bus,” said Ivan Maldonado, interim director for StarMetro.
Construction will begin on the north side of the plaza closest to Tennessee Street first. During this time, all north side gates will be temporarily relocated to the south side. After the north side is complete, construction will take place on the south side of the plaza closest to Duval Street. During this time, all south side gates will be temporarily relocated to the north side. Signs will be placed throughout the plaza letting customers know of the temporary gate change. Staff expects to wrap-up construction within six to eight weeks.
Over the past six months, StarMetro has made several improvements to C.K. Steele Plaza, including resealing the ceiling, installing new trash receptacles and signing a contract with a new cleaning vendor.
“All in all, we hope that these improvements and other planned improvements for the future will help make C.K. Steele Plaza a treasure for our customers and the downtown area,” said Maldonado.
